Solar panel warranties
Solar panel manufacturers offer a range of warranties that ensure you’ll have support and coverage in the unlikely event of an issue like hail or falling tree branches.
Power output warranties ensure that panel performance will not drop below a certain level during the warranty period (usually 25 years). For example, a manufacturer may provide a warranty to ensure that peak power output will not drop below 85 percent for 25 years.
Some manufacturers will also include an additional warranty that promises a higher output level for a shorter period of time. As an example, a secondary warranty can guarantee at least 90 percent of the initial power output for the first 10 years.
Panels typically come with a workmanship warranty that protects consumers against defective panel parts, usually for the first five years. Inverters are also usually warranted for 10 years.
How to maintain your solar panels?
Solar panels are made of tempered glass, so they are built to withstand hail and other harsh weather conditions. Solar panel systems have no moving parts, with the exception of tracking mounts, which reduces the chances of any problems.
Any problem with solar panel performance is usually related to electricity generation, so most installers recommend monitoring your system’s production. By paying attention to changes in production, you can proactively identify and address issues.
Generally, solar panels do not need to be cleaned. If you live in a place with a lot of smoke, dust or dirt, you may see a drop in production over time that can be corrected by cleaning your panels. But if your panels are installed on your roof, your best bet is to hire a professional cleaning service rather than trying to clean it yourself. Installation of solar panels in snow Many people in areas that receive significant snowfall often ask whether it is necessary to clear the snow from the panels. In general the answer is no – snow usually melts and falls off the roof shortly after it falls, so it doesn’t have a big impact on your overall production level. In order for your panels to be self-cleaning, they will need to be mounted at an angle of 15 degrees or more.
